The Gertrude Trials
Gertrude wakes up on a Monday morning. Or a Tuesday. Or a Saturday. She's too old to care.
The folds of her body weigh heavy as she drags herself out of bed. "Good morning, Gertrude!," she says to the toothless smile in the mirror. As she gets herself ready for the day, she whispers prayers of thanks for waking up another day. She pops her teeth into her mouth, washes her face, and finds that buckling her pants has gotten harder and harder the more bloated her fingers have gotten. "Being old and alone is not easy...," she thinks, lightheartedly.
She makes her way to her kitchen in slow steps, finding herself before the first of the many seemingly harmless choices she will have throughout her day.
Still quite sleepy, Gertrude could really use some coffee to wake her up, but the doctor said that caffeine is bad for her heart. Plus, orange juice could help her with her vitamin C deficiency.
Which one should Gertrude drink?
