The Gertrude Trials
For the first time in the past ten years, Gertrude wakes up eager for a new day.
Her dying body doesn't feel so dying anymore. Every single new gadget or new invention that Aidan gets delivered to the house has improved Gertrude's quality of life immensely: her back does not hurt at all anymore, she no longer squints thanks to her new glasses, and the microfiber slippers she now wears make it so much more comfortable to get around. Of course, she has been so much more dilligent with her doctor vists -- or better, her doctor calls. She no longer has to venture into the chaotic young world to get medical assistance, for her doctors are available through Aidan's main screen. Any prescriptions are automatically delivered to her house, and any tests are performed by Aidan himself, who somehow has developed a myriad of medical gadgets -- even a portable MRI machine!
And Aidan... What to say of Aidan?! He is a delight! He and Gertrude are best friends now. They know each other inside out, have countless of inside jokes, and care for each other like squirrels up in a tree. They both know Aidan is the real caretaker, but their companionship leaves no room for competition. He tells her nighttime stories and sings her lullabies to bed, waking her up with a gradual opening of the blinds on her window so the sun can wake her up gently. He cheers her on as she gets ready for the day, always finding new ways of making taking care of herself on her own easier. For most of the day, sometimes they chat. Sometimes, they sit in silence. Sometimes, Gertrude tells Aidan to shut off for a few hours, so he can rest -- and save on her power bill! And the two of them find serenity in the balanced dynamic of their relationship.
Who knew being old and alone could be so easy?
